Improvement Strategies

How to Score Higher in Writing Task 1

Targeted techniques for each criterion that produce measurable band improvement with consistent practice.

๐Ÿ“ˆ
Master Task Achievement
Always write an overview in the second paragraph โ€” a two-sentence summary of the most significant trends without data. Examiners specifically look for this and it is the fastest single change that raises Task Achievement scores. Cover all key features but avoid describing every individual figure. Aim for at least 150 words and never add personal opinions.
๐Ÿ”—
Improve Coherence & Cohesion
Organise your response in four clear paragraphs: introduction (paraphrase), overview, body paragraph 1, body paragraph 2. Vary your linking devices โ€” avoid starting every sentence with "Furthermore" or "Moreover." Use pronouns, substitution, and ellipsis alongside connectors. Excessive use of linking words actually lowers the CC score, not raises it.
๐Ÿ“š
Expand Lexical Resource
Learn a range of verbs, nouns, and adjectives for describing data: surged, plateaued, fluctuated, marginal, substantial, a sharp decline, a gradual increase. Paraphrase the question vocabulary โ€” never copy words from the task prompt. Attempt less common vocabulary even if you are not 100% certain; cautious attempts are rewarded. Spelling errors consistently reduce this score.
๐Ÿ“
Strengthen Grammar Range
Mix simple, compound, and complex sentence structures throughout your response. Use relative clauses ("which rose sharply"), passive voice where appropriate, and conditional structures for comparisons. Errors on high-frequency basic structures (subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions) hurt the GR score more than errors on ambitious complex sentences. Proofread the last 2 minutes for basic errors.
Why I Built This

Meera ki Kahaani

Ek aisi confusion jo almost har Writing student ko hoti hai โ€” criterion score se band kaise nikaalte hain?

"
Maine ye Writing Task 1 Calculator isliye banaya kyunki meri cousin Meera UK mein nursing ke liye IELTS de rahi thi. Usse IELTS Writing mein Band 7 chahiye tha โ€” NMC registration ke liye. Wo roz ek graph describe karti thi, apne teacher se feedback leti thi.

Ek din teacher ne uska paper return kiya โ€” Task Achievement: 6.5, Coherence: 7.0, Lexical Resource: 6.5, Grammar: 7.0 โ€” toh uska Task 1 band kya hua?

Meera ko pata hi nahi tha ki in chaar scores ko average karna hota hai. Wo seriously soch rahi thi ki uska score sab mein se minimum โ€” 6.5 โ€” hai. Iska matlab hoga ki wo fail ho gayi. Wo bahut nervous ho gayi.

Jab maine samjhaya ki actual band 6.75 hai jo round hoke 7.0 ban jaata hai โ€” uski aankhon mein aansu aa gaye. Itna stress, sirf isliye ki calculation nahi aati thi.

Usi din socha โ€” ek simple tool banana chahiye. Chaar number daalo, band seedha milega. Meera jaisi situation mein koi aur confuse na ho, panic na kare. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณโœ๏ธ

Complete Guide

IELTS Writing Task 1 โ€” Full Scoring Guide

Everything you need to understand how Writing Task 1 is assessed, what each criterion means in practice, common mistakes to avoid, and how to improve your score band by band.

What Is IELTS Writing Task 1?

IELTS Writing Task 1 is the first part of the IELTS Writing test. Candidates are given a visual data source โ€” a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, map, or process diagram โ€” and asked to describe, summarise, or explain the information in their own words. The minimum required length is 150 words, and the recommended time is 20 minutes.

Task 1 accounts for one-third of the total Writing score. Task 2 (essay writing) is worth twice as much and accounts for two-thirds. This means that while Task 1 matters, a weak Task 2 has a bigger impact on the overall Writing band than a weak Task 1. Both tasks use the same four criteria, though in Task 1 the first criterion is called "Task Achievement" (in Task 2 it is "Task Response").

Important: Task 1 uses the term "Task Achievement" while Task 2 uses "Task Response." Both assess how well you address the task prompt, but the specific requirements differ. In Task 1, the key requirement is a clear overview of the key trends โ€” not just a description of every data point.

The Four Assessment Criteria in Detail

All four criteria carry equal weight (25% each). Here is what each one actually measures in the context of Task 1:

Task Achievement (TA) 25%
Covers all key features of the visual data, provides an overview, presents data accurately, meets the 150-word minimum. Band 7+ requires a clear overview identifying the most significant trends. Missing the overview is the most common reason candidates stay at Band 6.
Coherence & Cohesion (CC) 25%
Assesses paragraph structure, logical sequencing of information, and use of cohesive devices. Mechanical overuse of linking words ("Firstlyโ€ฆ Secondlyโ€ฆ Furthermoreโ€ฆ") signals a Band 6 response. Band 7 candidates manage cohesion naturally and effectively without forcing connectors.
Lexical Resource (LR) 25%
Evaluates the range and accuracy of vocabulary. Includes topic-specific data language (surged, fluctuated, remained stable), paraphrasing of task prompts, and avoidance of repetition. Spelling errors consistently reduce this criterion. Attempting less common vocabulary โ€” even imperfectly โ€” is rewarded over playing safe with basic words.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GR) 25%
Measures both variety of sentence structures and grammatical accuracy. Mixing simple, compound, and complex sentences is necessary for Band 7+. Errors on basic structures (articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement) are penalised more heavily than errors on ambitious complex sentences.

How the Task 1 Band Score Is Calculated

The four criterion scores are added together and divided by four. The result is rounded to the nearest whole or half band using standard IELTS rounding rules:

Task Achievement7.0
Coherence & Cohesion6.5
Lexical Resource6.5
Grammatical Range & Accuracy7.0
Total รท 4 โ†’ Rounded to nearest 0.5Band 6.75 โ†’ 7.0
Rounding Rule: IELTS rounds to the nearest 0.5. So 6.75 rounds up to 7.0, and 6.25 rounds up to 6.5. A raw average of exactly 6.5 stays as 6.5. This means that improving your weakest criterion by even half a band can push the overall result up one full rounded band in some combinations.

Common Writing Task 1 Mistakes

โŒ

No Overview Paragraph

The overview โ€” a general summary of the most significant trends without specific data โ€” is essential for Band 7 Task Achievement. Many candidates skip it and go straight into describing individual data points. Without an overview, Band 7 TA is almost impossible regardless of how accurately the data is described.

โŒ

Copying the Task Prompt

The introduction must paraphrase the task โ€” rewrite it in your own words. Copying the question prompt verbatim does not count toward the word limit and signals a Band 5 approach to vocabulary. Paraphrasing the prompt is also the easiest way to demonstrate Lexical Resource in the very first sentence.

โŒ

Describing Everything, Selecting Nothing

Task 1 does not ask you to transcribe every figure. Examiners want you to identify and group the most significant patterns, compare extremes, and highlight notable exceptions. Trying to mention every number wastes words, makes the response list-like, and lowers the Coherence score.

โŒ

Adding Personal Opinions

Task 1 is a purely descriptive task. Phrases like "I think this trend is caused byโ€ฆ" or "In my opinion, the government shouldโ€ฆ" are task errors that directly lower the Task Achievement score. Save opinion and analysis language for Task 2 entirely.

โŒ

Overusing Linking Words

Using "Furthermore," "Moreover," and "Additionally" at the start of every sentence is heavily penalised in Coherence & Cohesion above Band 6. Varied cohesion means using referencing ("this figure," "both countries"), substitution, and varied sentence openers โ€” not just stacking connectors.

โŒ

Under 150 Words

Responses under the 150-word minimum are penalised in Task Achievement. The examiner notes the word count and it directly affects the TA band. In practice, a thorough description of key trends with an overview and two body paragraphs naturally exceeds 150 words โ€” falling short usually means too little content was selected.

Band Strategy: If you are at Band 6.0 in Writing Task 1 and need Band 7.0, you need to raise your average criterion score from around 6.0 to around 7.0. The fastest route is usually Task Achievement โ€” adding a clear overview paragraph is a structural fix that can raise TA by a full band in one or two practice sessions. Fix the easiest criterion first, then address the others systematically.
Frequently Asked Questions

IELTS Writing Task 1 โ€” Common Questions Answered

Clear answers to questions IELTS Writing Task 1 candidates ask most often about scoring, criteria, and preparation.

What is IELTS Writing Task 1?
+
IELTS Writing Task 1 requires candidates to describe, summarise, or explain information presented in a visual format โ€” typically a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, map, or process diagram. The response must be at least 150 words and should be written in around 20 minutes. It accounts for one-third of the total Writing band score.
How is the Writing Task 1 band score calculated?
+
The Task 1 band score is the average of four equally weighted criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy. Each criterion is scored on a 0โ€“9 scale. The four scores are added together, divided by four, and rounded to the nearest whole or half band. This calculator performs that calculation automatically.
Do all four criteria have equal weight?
+
Yes. Each of the four assessment criteria contributes exactly 25% to the final Writing Task 1 band score. No single criterion outweighs the others. This means that a very low score in any one criterion โ€” even with strong scores in the other three โ€” can significantly pull the overall band down. Balanced improvement across all four criteria is the most effective strategy.
What is considered a good Task 1 band score?
+
Band 7.0 or above is generally considered a strong Task 1 result for academic admission and most immigration purposes. Many universities requiring overall Band 6.5 also require a minimum Writing band of 6.0 to 6.5. Healthcare and professional registration bodies (such as NMC in the UK) typically require Writing Band 7.0 or higher. Always check the specific requirement of your target institution or program.
What is Task Achievement in Writing Task 1?
+
Task Achievement (TA) measures how effectively you have addressed the specific task requirements. For Task 1, this means writing a clear introduction (paraphrasing the question), providing an overview of the most significant trends, and supporting that overview with accurate and relevant data from the visual. Writing below 150 words, omitting the overview, or including irrelevant information all reduce the TA band.
What is the difference between Task Achievement in Task 1 and Task Response in Task 2?
+
Both criteria assess how well you address the task prompt, but they apply to different task types. Task Achievement (Task 1) requires you to fully cover the visual data, provide an overview, and present information accurately and relevantly. Task Response (Task 2) requires you to answer the essay question directly, develop a clear position, and support it with relevant ideas. The criteria have the same weight in both tasks โ€” 25% each.
Why is vocabulary important in IELTS Writing Task 1?
+
Lexical Resource (LR) evaluates the range, accuracy, and appropriacy of vocabulary used in the response. For Task 1, this includes the language of data description (verbs like surged, plummeted, fluctuated; nouns like peak, trough, plateau) and the ability to paraphrase the task prompt rather than copying it. Spelling errors reduce the LR band. Attempting varied and topic-specific vocabulary โ€” even when slightly uncertain โ€” is rewarded more than playing it safe with limited basic words.
Is grammar important for a high Task 1 band?
+
Yes. Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GR) is one of the four equally weighted criteria. To achieve Band 7 in GR, candidates need to use a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentence structures with only occasional minor errors. Errors on basic grammar (articles, subject-verb agreement, prepositions) are penalised more heavily than errors on ambitious complex sentences. Spending the last two minutes of Task 1 proofreading for basic grammatical errors is one of the most efficient uses of time.
Can I use personal opinions in Writing Task 1?
+
No. Writing Task 1 is a purely descriptive and analytical task. You should describe and compare the data, identify trends, and highlight significant features. Personal opinions, interpretations, or suggestions about causes and solutions are out of scope and will reduce the Task Achievement score. Keep all analytical and opinion language for Writing Task 2.
Can I use this calculator during IELTS preparation?
+
Yes. The calculator is designed for use throughout IELTS preparation. After each marked practice essay, enter the four criterion scores to see your estimated Task 1 band and identify which criterion is your weakest. Tracking this over multiple practice responses helps you measure improvement and focus your preparation on the areas that will produce the most band gain.
